The first one was always the hardest, Spike supposed. He still remembered his, and it had been a hundred and fifty years since he first felt the cruel burn of heartbreak.

“I don’t know what happened. Everything was okay, I thought, and then he just – he just…” Dawn started to cry again and Spike shushed her, wiping her tears away as best he could, letting her lean into his shoulder. “I wish I could fix it.”

“Aww, Niblet. If wishes were horses…” he replied, softly.

“Guess I ought to know better than to expect fairy tale endings by now, huh?”
