FIC - The Last Summer
Aug. 21st, 2011 10:49 pmtitle: The Last Summer
pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: PG
Prompt: at the J2 Summer Break Commenet Fic Meme
A/N: Response to the prompt by bewaretheides, one of my favorite fandom writers ever in response to this: Jared and Jensen have been best friends almost their whole lives, even though Jared's a year younger. Now it's their last summer together before Jensen packs up and goes to college an hour or two away and Jared's starting to think maybe it's time to do that thing he's never been brave enough to do; to admit the one secret he's never told Jensen for fear of losing the best friend he's ever had because if he doesn't, he just might lose Jensen anyway. Sorry for the lack of porn, I hope you like it anyway :)
When Jared was seven, he'd already lost his two bottom front baby teeth the normal way. Then, one day on the playground at recess, he lost another when that mean boy from his class pushed him down face first from the monkey bars. Jared tried to hide his tears and held his hand to his mouth, hoping he could find his tooth so he could put it under his pillow that night. A minute later, he looked up to find another kid standing over the bully from his class with a triumphant look on his face. The kid walked over to Jared, sat down next to him, and picked up the missing tooth from the ground. He brushed the dirt off and handed it to Jared.
"I'm Jensen. You ok?"
"Uh, yeah," Jared replied, trying not to look like he'd been crying. He was in second grade, he wasn't a baby anymore. "Thanks." He pocketed the tooth, thinking of the quarters the tooth fairy would be leaving for him later.
"Come on, I'll walk you in to the nurse."
And so it began. Jensen was in third grade, but he wasn't embarrassed to be friends with a second grader. They hung out on the playground and after school sometimes. Soon, they became fixtures at each other's houses, like an extra family member who didn't have to be invited to stay for dinner or spend the night.
The early years spun by, and as the two boys grew older, their friendship only got stronger. They told each other everything, secrets they'd never share with anyone else. When Jensen had his first kiss in sixth grade, he whispered every detail of it to Jared over a bag of Twizzlers and a couple of cans of Dr. Pepper.
Eighth grade was the hardest, probably, Jensen having moved on to high school and Jared constantly worried that he'd be replaced as Jen's best friend. That year, Jared made a couple of new friends and confided in Jensen that he'd tried smoking pot with them. Jensen's eyes narrowed as he explained that those kids weren't who Jared needed to be spending time with, if they were going to talk him into doing such stupid things. Jared had a strange feeling then, something about Jen being protective of him made the new and unfamiliar stirrings in his belly very strong.
The next year they were in school together again, and things were the same, but different. Jared kissed a girl for the first time and didn't like it, it was nothing like Jensen had described his first kiss with a girl feeling like.
For a while while he was in the eleventh grade, Jensen had a girlfriend. She was nice, and she was pretty, and Jared hated her with the passion of a thousand fiery suns, and that's when he got it. He was in love with Jensen.
How fucking hopeless was that? Jen would never feel the same about him, and Jared would never risk the lifelong friendship they had by letting Jensen in on his feelings. So he ignored it. He tried to ignore it, anyway. But every time they were together, Jared longed for Jen to look at him the way he looked at some of the girls they knew.
Time kept on passing, so much more rapidly than either of them expected. Jared found himself sitting on the front porch alone at the party for Jensen's graduation, cursing himself for his feelings, and seeing his vision narrow down to the few short months he had left before Jensen headed off to Texas A&M. Once that happened, he was certain, any chance he had would be gone.
A couple of weeks later, the two of them were sitting on the floor on Jensen's room, eating popcorn and sneaking a few beers from the fridge while they watched a Die Hard marathon.
Jensen wasn't really sure if it was the hourglass in his head that was rapidly running in the wrong direction, or the beers, or his own weakness and desire that made him do it. While McClane was delivering a cheesy one-liner to a bad guy on the small screen in front of them, Jared's hand moved from the bowl of popcorn onto Jensen's forearm, resulting in Jensen's chuckling and attention to the movie to cease immediately.
"Jen, I'm sorry. I know you're leaving soon and I won't see you much, and after this maybe I won't see you at all. But there's something I have to tell you."
Jensen pressed the mute button on the remote and looked back at Jared inquisitively, wondering if he was going to make another confession of drug use or worse based on the dejected look on his best friend's face.
"Come on, Jay, there's nothing you could tell me that would make me never want to see you again. Whatever it is, just come on out with it, and we'll deal."
Jared sat in silence for a moment, not sure how to proceed. Jensen reached over and tilted Jared's chin so they were eye to eye. "Speak, dude."
And so he spoke.
"JensenIloveyoulikethelovekindofway, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.", he blurted out with his eyes shut tightly.
He expected a strong reaction, maybe a punch in the mouth, maybe a disgusted look, maybe an order to get the fuck out and never come back. He waited for whichever one he'd get.
"Jay. Why didn't you tell me?"
"I just did."
"Fuck. You're an idiot."
Jensen knocked over the popcorn bowl and one of the cans of Coors as he moved in to kiss Jared like he'd never been kissed by any girl.
"Jesus. Jen. I never thought..."
"Shut up. We have the whole summer, And anyway, A&M's not that far. You can drive that piece of garbage Civic out to visit me whenver you want."
"No fucking way. I thought you might punch me", Jared mumbled, astonished at the unexpected reciprocation of these feelings.
"Again, I say, you are an idiot. And no, I will not take it back", he chuckled, calling to mind so many of their early childhood arguments with deamnds of "take it back!" included.
Then he kissed him again. McClane and the popcorn and the beer were forgotten, and the possibility of that summer ahead of them, and the possibilities beyond that were the only things that mattered.

Date: 2011-08-22 01:17 pm (UTC)You know, when Jensen picked up Jared's tooth at the start, I thought 'gross, who does that?' but then I relaised that when you're 7 and 8, the tooth fairy is pretty important :)
