Looking over at the red-haired girl who was assigned to his table, Xander saw her face. She was frightened, and he didn’t want to see that. She was a nice girl, it didn’t seem like she even had cooties.

“What’s the matter?” he asked, thinking something terrible must have happened.

She held up the crayon. It was yellow, and split into two pieces.

“I broke the yellow crayon.” the girl said, eyes wet with tears.

“It’s all right, look, use this instead.”

He handed her a stamp and a pad of ink. “You can make real pretty pictures with that.”
