I've been obsessed with the notion that my stories ought to be podficced for a while now, and have entertained the notion of possibly recording my own. Here is my barrier - I have lived my entire life in the deep South and I'm just not sure if it will sound ridiculous, considering the fact that I've got an exceptionally distinct Southern accent.

Opinions, anyone?

I too have a southern(ish) accent, so you will sound perfectly normal to me. There won't be an accent at all. :3

Mine is, like, Designing Women kind of southern. I might record one, and see how it sounds.

Definitely record your own voice and see how it works. A good recording setup also helps. I work with a number of voice actors, some of whom might do short podcasts for free. Let me know if you are interested in contacting them

I have no good recording setup, just a free download of Audacity, which I'm not even sure will work to post on LJ.

Send me a message if you think you know anyone who might be interested. Most of my stories are very short, less than 2-3K words.

I have been considering podficcing as well! I would definitely record your own fic first and go from there! I would love to hear your accent :D

Awwww, thanks. The problem that I'm having is that all I have is Audacity and I can't figure out how to post it.

DOOOOOOOO IIIIIIIIIIIT!

We northern folk are simply mesmerized by southern accents. I think they are perfect for storytelling too! I would listen!

I say if you want to read your own fics than do so. I've heard podfics that were read by people who are from different countries speaking in English.. what in the world is wrong with a Southern accent.. Better than hearing Dean in a female voice with a foreign accent.
Go for it.

I've seen people with 2 versions, one American accent & one English - would that be an option?

Sure, I can't see why not. I've only had one of my stories podficced and it was by a young lady with an English (I think) accent, and it sounded damn good to me :)

Do you know someone at a library or with similar literary experience who could listen to a sample of you reading your work and give you an informed opinion?

Actually, a friend of mine just hooked me up with a local guy who does voice-overs, he offered to record a couple of my fics for me. I am soooooooooo excited.
