Some help, please, from my British friends
Sep. 8th, 2012 08:30 pmThere's a phrase I'm struggling with in this ridiculously long Sherlock fic I'm writing. I'm hoping someone can help me.
And maybe there's not even a different phrase for it, but I want to get it right.
In American English, when an athlete gets sidelined by injury or a person can't do the things they normally do because of a physical condition, we generally refer to it as "getting benched" or, as an allusion to sitting on the sidelines while the game goes on without you, "riding the pine". In American football or hockey, if a player has to sit out a game, he's listed as "injured reserve", which means he's unable to participate for a period of time.
So, if I'm writing something that uses British vernacular, is there a different term for this?
