The way he followed Buffy around, constantly making blatant references to wanting more than just friendship, was really kind of pathetic.

It wasn’t ever going to happen, he soon realized. He deflected by making constant jokes and smart-ass remarks. He wasn’t going to just sit around forever so he could supply Buffy and Willow with comic relief.

So, when Cordelia finally started showing interest, he acted on it quickly; accepted her affection and fell right into their relationship.

It’s not like he was using her, like she was some kind of consolation prize. But Cordelia wasn’t Buffy, never would be.
